Why Is Huawei Microwave Equipment Hard to Buy in the Secondary Market?

As a professional telecom spare parts supplier based in China, we often receive inquiries for Huawei microwave equipment in our daily work.

However, the successful quotation rate for these inquiries is very low. In many cases, our reply to customers is: “Sorry, we are unable to support this request.”

Many buyers may have experienced the same problem. Here let us discuss the reson together

Huawei microwave equipment is widely used in telecom transmission networks, especially for base station backhaul, rural network coverage, emergency deployment and areas where fiber deployment is difficult or expensive.

In China’s secondary telecom market, many Huawei microwave products are not as easy to source as common RRU, BBU or BTS boards. This is not caused by one single reason. It is usually the result of limited dismantled supply, configuration complexity, matching requirements, testing difficulty and export compliance checks.

This article explains why Huawei microwave equipment can be difficult to buy, especially for used and refurbished telecom spare parts. 微信图片_20260608165959_1207_6

Huawei Microwave Equipment Is Not a Single Product

When buyers say “Huawei microwave equipment”, they may be referring to many different products and configurations.

Huawei microwave equipment may include:

  • indoor units
  • outdoor units
  • E-band microwave units
  • antennas
  • IF cables
  • power modules
  • service boards
  • interface boards
  • mounting kits
  • controllers
  • accessories

Huawei’s microwave product families include solutions such as OptiX RTN split-mount microwave, RTN 380A E-band microwave, and other base station backhaul microwave solutions.

Because of this, a general request such as “Huawei microwave” is usually not enough for quotation. The exact model, frequency band, hardware version and site requirement must be confirmed.

Many Units Are Still in Service

One important reason is that many Huawei microwave units are still in operation.

Microwave is still used for base station backhaul, rural transmission, emergency links, remote sites and places where fiber deployment is difficult, expensive or slow. Huawei’s base station backhaul solution also shows that microwave transmission is used in scenarios where wired transmission may face high construction cost or long deployment time.

This means microwave equipment is not simply “old equipment waiting to be removed”. In many networks, it is still part of the active transmission system.

As a result, the quantity of dismantled Huawei microwave equipment entering the secondary market may be limited.

Operators and Maintenance Companies Keep Spare Parts

Even when Huawei microwave equipment is removed from a site, it may not immediately enter the open market.

Operators, tower companies, system integrators and maintenance companies often keep removed microwave units as spare parts. This is because a microwave link can be important for an existing site or transmission route.

If a link fails, having a matching spare unit can help restore service faster. Therefore, useful ODU, IDU, power modules, interface boards, antennas and accessories may be kept internally instead of being sold into the secondary market.

This reduces the available supply for international buyers.

Frequency Band Must Match the Network

One of the biggest reasons Huawei microwave equipment is hard to buy is frequency band matching.

Microwave equipment is not universal. Different sites may use different frequency bands, channel bandwidths and link designs. For example, Huawei RTN 380A works in the E-band range of 71–76 GHz or 81–86 GHz and supports high-capacity microwave backhaul or aggregation links.

Other microwave systems may work in traditional microwave bands. Huawei RTN 310 is described as a full-outdoor microwave transmission device working at frequency bands from 7 GHz to 38 GHz.

This means the buyer cannot only confirm the model name. The frequency band must also match the existing network.

E-Band and Traditional Microwave Are Different

Huawei E-band microwave is often used for high-capacity transmission. Huawei’s E-band product page explains that E-band operates from 71 GHz to 86 GHz and is used for higher-capacity microwave links.

Huawei also promotes Super Dual Band, which combines traditional microwave bands and E-band to balance capacity, distance and availability.

This makes sourcing more complicated. A buyer may need not only one device, but a matching combination of ODU, antenna, interface, software and site design.

If one part is wrong, the whole link may not work as expected.

Complete Sets Are Difficult to Collect

Huawei microwave equipment often needs to work as a complete link or matched system.

A buyer may need:

  • ODU
  • IDU
  • antenna
  • mounting bracket
  • IF cable
  • power cable
  • grounding cable
  • SFP module
  • power module
  • interface board
  • accessories

In the secondary market, one part may be available while another part is missing. Sometimes the main unit is available, but the matching antenna or mounting kit is not. Sometimes the accessories are available, but the correct frequency band is not.

This is why a supplier may need more time to collect a complete workable set. 微信图片_20260608170000_1208_6

Testing Is More Difficult Than Common Telecom Boards

Testing microwave equipment is usually more difficult than testing common telecom boards.

For a simple board, basic power-on and functional testing may be enough for many orders. But microwave equipment often requires a matching ODU, IDU, frequency band, configuration, software environment and link test setup.

In many cases, a seller can provide serial label photos, physical condition photos and basic power-on confirmation, but full microwave link testing may not always be possible.

For this reason, testable Huawei microwave equipment is more valuable in the secondary market.

5G Increases Capacity Requirements

5G networks need higher backhaul capacity than older mobile networks. Huawei has described 5G microwave solutions that support high-capacity backhaul, including long-reach E-band and simplified microwave architecture.

For example, Huawei announced a 5G microwave long-reach E-band solution designed to support 5G deployment with higher capacity and longer reach. Huawei also released a 5G microwave simplified architecture for high-capacity microwave backhaul scenarios.

Because of these requirements, many buyers need specific Huawei microwave models and versions. Older or lower-capacity units may not be acceptable for their project.

It Is Not Simply Because of Military Use

Some buyers may wonder whether Huawei microwave equipment is hard to buy because microwave technology may have military or sensitive applications.

This should be understood carefully.

Huawei RTN, E-band and related microwave equipment are mainly used for civil telecom transmission networks, such as mobile backhaul, enterprise transmission and network infrastructure. The main reason these products are hard to buy in the secondary market is usually not military use.

The more practical reasons are:

  • many units are still in service
  • dismantled supply is limited
  • operators keep spare parts
  • frequency bands must match
  • complete sets are difficult to collect
  • testing is more complex
  • some models are still valuable for active networks

However, telecom transmission equipment may still be subject to compliance checks in some export cases. Buyers and suppliers should confirm the destination country, end user and end use before shipment, especially for sensitive regions or projects.

Regulatory and Export Compliance May Affect Orders

International trade in telecom equipment may involve compliance checks. In some markets, Huawei telecom equipment is also affected by regulatory restrictions. For example, the UK government announced that Huawei equipment must be removed from UK 5G networks by 2027.

These policies do not mean every country has the same rule, and they do not apply to every type of microwave spare part in the same way. However, they can affect procurement channels, customer decisions, documentation requirements and shipment arrangements.

For export orders, it is better to confirm:

  • destination country
  • end user
  • end use
  • shipping method
  • import requirements
  • compliance restrictions

This helps reduce payment, customs and shipment risks.

Why Prices Can Be Higher Than Expected

Some buyers expect used Huawei microwave equipment to be cheap. In reality, the price may still be high when:

  • the model is hard to find
  • the frequency band is rare
  • the buyer needs a specific hardware version
  • the item is still used in active networks
  • accessories must be included
  • testing is required before shipment
  • the quantity is difficult to collect
  • the project is urgent

For telecom spare parts, the lowest price is not always the safest option. A very low price may mean unclear condition, wrong band, missing accessories or unstable supply. 微信图片_20260608170001_1209_6

What Buyers Should Provide Before Quotation

To quote Huawei microwave equipment accurately, buyers should provide as much information as possible.

A useful RFQ should include:

  • Brand: Huawei
  • Product family: OptiX RTN / RTN 900 / RTN 380 / other
  • Exact model
  • Part number or item code
  • Frequency band
  • Quantity
  • Required condition: new, used or refurbished
  • Accessories required
  • Destination country
  • Required lead time
